Antariksha – the space between

empowering minds, transforming communities

The Antariksha program, meaning "the space bridging opposites," is a unique initiative aimed at protecting children and adolescents from neglect, abuse, and exploitation worsened by gender-based stigma, discrimination, and violence. Recognizing the connection between gender equity and child protection, the program holistically addresses the issues that arise at this intersection. Praajak's program focuses on transforming child care and safeguarding by emphasizing the gendered aspects of these issues.

One key aspect of Antariksha is engaging with boys and men, which is at the heart of the programme. Societal expectations and restrictive definitions of masculinity create vulnerabilities and challenges for those who identify as male. The pressure to engage in risk-taking behaviors to demonstrate masculinity perpetuates harm to girls and women as well as to themselves and prevents them from seeking advice and support. Praajak aims to work with boys and men to help them reflect on their assumptions and biases, strengths, and inclinations, fostering their development of a healthy sense of self. The program seeks to empower them as agents of change in their families and communities, viewing them as critical allies in challenging deep-rooted unequal power dynamics, gendered stereotypes, and harmful practices.

The uniqueness of Praajak’s approach is that it empowers adolescent boys and girls to drive change within themselves and subsequently their families and communities, equipping them with the tools needed for this transformation. The program also involves working with parents and community influencers to create an environment where children's rights are upheld and gender justice is promoted. Operating across 8 districts in West Bengal, the initiative uses a structured framework with clear outcomes and milestones.

Central to the program is the Foundational Gender Course, consisting of nine modules for both boys and girls. This course covers essential topics like human rights, gender-based discrimination, and sexual and reproductive health, helping adolescents understand issues such as early marriage, family violence, sexual abuse and harassment, child labour, and safe migration. The training aims to address these problems by exploring their root causes and promoting solutions within families and communities.

A key component of the program is collectivization, which brings together adolescent and youth groups to articulate their challenges and strategize for change. Praajak’s approach, including learning circles and sports, has fostered strong collectives that serve as safe spaces for members to advocate for gender equity and children's rights. These collectives actively engage in community action projects, such as Kabaddi tournaments and gender awareness campaigns, enhancing community life and promoting social change.

Sports, particularly Kabaddi, are used as a tool for empowerment. The program’s focus on sports helps girls develop life skills, self-efficacy, and leadership abilities. Through participation in Kabaddi, girls gain confidence and assertiveness, which they use to advocate for their rights and make informed life choices. Their success has inspired their communities, particularly in changing perceptions about girls' involvement in sports and fostering broader social change.
