Finding Strength Through Collective Support – Swapna’s Story

Name: Swapna Mondal

Age: 33 Years

Village: Bishwanathpur

Role: Active Member of the Basanta Utsav Women's Collective

Background:

Swapna Mondal is a mother of two children. Her husband works as a seasonal migrant labourer, while the family also runs a small sound system rental business.

For many years, Swapna lived in fear and silence. She experienced emotional distress due to her husband's extramarital relationship and was subjected to physical violence whenever she protested. Her opinions carried little weight within the family, and she had no safe space where she could share her struggles.

When she first attended a Basanta Utsav Women's Collective meeting, she sat quietly in a corner, covering her face with the end of her saree and avoiding participation. Her lack of confidence was evident to everyone.

The Journey of Change

Through regular participation in collective meetings, Swapna gradually developed trust and meaningful relationships with other women.

The safe and supportive environment encouraged her to speak openly about her experiences for the first time. She shared her concerns about domestic violence and her husband’s behaviour with the group.

The collective responded with empathy, solidarity, and practical support. Together, the women raised the issue with local community representatives and the Panchayat. Through collective action and community dialogue, her husband was held accountable for his behaviour.

Throughout this process, the power of collective solidarity became the driving force behind Swapna’s transformation.
