Our History
Deep Purkayastha,
Founder of Praajak Development Society

"Before 1997, for 2 years I was working in an HIV/AIDS prevention programme, during my working sphere I realized that gender was the root cause of disempowerment not just for women but also for men. Stigma and discrimination were merely the visible manifestations. I felt that much more work was required to be done with children and young men in the society to change the prevailing patriarchal pattern in our society. Hence my conscious decision was to work with children especially boys to change their value system right from the early days. I also embarked upon the plan of working with the state structures as they played a significant role in re establishing gender equality in the society."

In 1997, Praajak was established and was dedicated towards preventing the abuse and exploitation of children and young people, especially those who occupy marginalized social locations. We seek to establish a child- and youth friendly society, one which acknowledges the full citizenship of young persons and provides them their rights. Most of our programmes focus on the child's right to protection, which has been one of the most neglected areas of intervention in work with children and young persons. We are committed to the dissemination of ideas about children's protection and rights in various sectors of society."
