ABOUT US I OUR WORK I STORIES OF HOPE I GET INVOLVED

Our Programmes
Our major programmatic components are:

Open Shelters (drop in centre and night shelters for children living in and around railway stations)
Promoting Community based Child Protection Safety Net anchored by Child Protection Committees
Supportive interventions in Government run Child Care Institutions (CCIs)
Networking and advocacy through Coalition for Child Right to Protection (CCRP)

Through these components, we work with children in need of care and protection (CNCP), Children in Conflict with Law (CCL) and other vulnerable children as considered by The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Act 2006 (hereafter referred as the JJ Act) and Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS, 2009). We partner with government and civil society actors to strengthen implementation of legislations, schemes and other instruments for upholding child rights in the country. We also seek to bring emerging issues and concerns related to child protection on to the public agenda and mobilize actions that can ultimately aid the transition to a more child friendly and gender equitable society.

Open Shelters (drop in centre and night shelters for children living in and around railway stations)
Popularly known as Muktangan, which means an open space, is our flagship programme since 2003. It is a contact and transit shelter programme for children in and around railway stations of New Jalpaiguri, Asansol, Malda and Kharagpur in West Bengal in collaboration with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Indian Railways.

Children attending the Muktangan centres are provided with non formal educational classes to promote functional literacy and facilitate enrollment in formal schools. Apart from Educational Inputs they are also provided with services like Protection, Health and Nutrition, Psychosocial support. Community Kitchens are organized for them throughout the year. We also facilitate family reunification of children.

Promoting Community based Child Protection Safety Net through the Child Protection Committees
At the community level we garner the support of women and youth to prevent, track and respond to child protection violations. Special emphasis is given to those rural areas which are prone to trafficking, unsafe migration and child labour. We are working with 52 such child protection units across the districts of West Bengal.

Through the Coalition for the Childs Right to Protection (CCRP) we are mobilizing and acting with likeminded groups and individuals for protecting rights of children living under vulnerable conditions in urban slums and rural villages. It acts as a platform to for bringing together youth groups, women's groups and other civil society organizations for collective actions.
